Award
El Programa de Becarios MacArthur , también conocido como Beca MacArthur y coloquialmente llamado " Beca Genius ", [a] es un premio otorgado anualmente por la Fundación John D. y Catherine T. MacArthur a típicamente entre 20 y 30 individuos que trabajan en cualquier campo que han demostrado "extraordinaria originalidad y dedicación en sus actividades creativas y una marcada capacidad de autodirección" y son ciudadanos o residentes de los Estados Unidos . [5]
Según el sitio web de la fundación, "la beca no es una recompensa por logros pasados, sino más bien una inversión en la originalidad, la perspicacia y el potencial de una persona", pero también dice que dicho potencial está "basado en un historial de logros significativos". El premio actual es de $800,000 pagados en cinco años en cuotas trimestrales. Anteriormente, era de $625,000. Esta cifra se incrementó de $500,000 en 2013 con la publicación de una revisión [6] del Programa de Becarios MacArthur. El premio ha sido llamado "uno de los premios más importantes que realmente no tiene ataduras " . [7]
El programa no acepta solicitudes. La fundación invita a presentar nominaciones anónimas y confidenciales, que son revisadas por un comité de selección anónimo y confidencial de una docena de personas. El comité revisa a todos los nominados y recomienda a los destinatarios al presidente y a la junta directiva . La mayoría de los nuevos becarios se enteran de su nominación y premio al recibir una llamada telefónica de felicitación. Destinatarios Desde 1981, 1.131 personas han sido nombradas becarias MacArthur, [9] con edades comprendidas entre los 18 y los 82 años. [10]
En las cinco amplias categorías definidas por la fundación, el desglose de la atención a los destinatarios es el siguiente: Artes 336; Humanidades 170; Asuntos públicos 257; STEM 335; y Ciencias sociales 120. [9]
De los 965 títulos finales obtenidos por 928 becarios durante el período de 1981 a 2018, 540 (56%) son doctorados, de los cuales 514 (53,3%) son doctorados. Las escuelas de la Ivy League otorgaron 306 (31,7%) títulos a 300 (32,3%) becarios. [11] [12]
