En arquitectura y artes decorativas , un rinceau (plural rinceaux ; del francés , derivado del francés antiguo rain 'rama con follaje') es una forma decorativa que consiste en un motivo continuo ondulado similar a un tallo del cual se ramifican tallos frondosos más pequeños o grupos de hojas a intervalos más o menos regulares. El término inglés scroll se usa con más frecuencia en inglés, especialmente cuando el patrón es regular y se repite a lo largo de una zona estrecha. En inglés, "rinceau" tiende a usarse cuando el diseño se extiende a lo largo de una zona más amplia, en un estilo similar a un patrón arabesco islámico .
El uso del rinceaux es frecuente en los frisos de los edificios romanos , donde generalmente se encuentra en un friso, el elemento intermedio de un entablamento , justo debajo de la cornisa. También está decorado en los ornamentos de las jambas y capiteles de las estructuras románicas y en frisos y paneles de edificios de los diversos estilos renacentistas , donde también aparecen diminutos animales o cabezas humanas. El rinceau experimentó un retorno al estilo clásico más simple en el siglo XVII, y en el siglo siguiente se aplicó con más libertad, sin una repetición estricta de formas idénticas. [2]
