Pukkelpop es un festival musical anual que se celebra cerca de la ciudad de Hasselt , Bélgica, entre mediados y finales de agosto. El festival fue fundado en 1985 por la organización juvenil Humanistic Youth of Leopoldsburg (en holandés: Humanistische Jongeren van Leopoldsburg o "Hujo"). Originariamente era un evento de un solo día, celebrado el 21 de julio (un día festivo nacional en Bélgica) en el pueblo de Leopoldsburg , ubicado aproximadamente a 25 km al norte de la sede actual del evento en Kiewit. Ese mismo año, Eminem se vio obligado a cancelar su participación confirmada como cabeza de cartel en el festival, ya que se le prohibió salir de los Estados Unidos.
En 2001, el festival se convirtió en un evento de tres días por primera vez, alcanzando un pico de asistencia de 115.000, un aumento del 76% con respecto al año anterior. En 2004, se agregó un octavo escenario, llamado Wablief? (palabra holandesa para "¿Qué?"). En 2005, el festival celebró su 20 aniversario, con cabezas de cartel como Pixies , The Prodigy y Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds . El evento también alcanzó otro pico de asistencia, totalizando 137.000 asistentes al festival.
El festival volvió en 2010 para su 25º aniversario, con Iron Maiden , Placebo , Queens of the Stone Age y Snow Patrol entre los artistas principales. Durante el festival de 2010, dos músicos murieron. Michael Been , cantante y guitarrista de The Call , murió el 19 de agosto de un ataque cardíaco después de realizar tareas como ingeniero de sonido para Black Rebel Motorcycle Club . [4] El 20 de agosto , el cantante de Ou Est Le Swimming Pool, Charles Haddon, se suicidó saltando de un mástil de telecomunicaciones en el área de estacionamiento detrás del escenario, poco después de la actuación del grupo en el festival. El festival de 2011 se vio afectado por una fuerte tormenta eléctrica durante la noche del 18 de agosto de 2011, el día de apertura del evento. La lluvia torrencial y los fuertes vientos derribaron varias carpas de conciertos, arrancaron árboles y derribaron torres de iluminación del festival y pantallas de video. La carpa del Chateau se derrumbó poco después de que la banda de rock estadounidense Smith Westerns comenzara a tocar su set. El cantante y guitarrista Cullen Omori actualizó la cuenta de Twitter de la banda directamente después del incidente: "El escenario se derrumbó, Max casi fue aplastado por los árboles, espero que Pukkelpop tenga seguro porque todo está en quiebra". El anemómetro más cercano , en la ciudad de Diepenbeek , registró ráfagas superiores a los 80 km/h (50 mph), con informes de granizo grande y la posibilidad de un tornado. El festival de 2011 iba a contar con Eminem, Foo Fighters, The Offspring , dEUS y Thirty Seconds to Mars entre los artistas principales. El incidente se produjo apenas cinco días después del derrumbe del escenario de la Feria Estatal de Indiana en los Estados Unidos, en el que murieron siete personas y se desató un debate sobre las normas en los eventos de conciertos al aire libre. Pukkelpop ofrece instalaciones de acampada para los asistentes. El camping se encuentra en un lado de Kempische Steenweg (con el recinto principal del evento ubicado directamente al otro lado) y se abre el día anterior al inicio del evento. Se implementan guardias de tráfico para dirigir el tráfico y a los asistentes durante el período del festival. Para fomentar el uso del transporte público, todos los tipos de entradas incluyen un viaje de ida y vuelta dentro de Bélgica a Hasselt o Kiewit en la red de trenes NMBS/SNCB o en la red de autobuses De Lijn . Polsslag (término holandés para "pulso" o "latido del corazón") fue un festival musical anual de un día que tuvo lugar en Hasselt en la primavera de 2008 y 2009. El evento, considerado el festival hermano de Pukkelpop, se celebró en el interior del Grenslandhallen de Hasselt. El festival contó con cuatro escenarios, cuyos nombres se conservan de Pukkelpop: The Marquee, Dance Hall, Club y Boiler Room.
