El sufragio femenino (el derecho de las mujeres a votar) se ha logrado en varias ocasiones en países de todo el mundo. Algunas mujeres de la Isla de Man (geográficamente parte de las Islas Británicas pero no del Reino Unido) obtuvieron el derecho a votar en 1881. [1]
Nueva Zelanda fue el primer país autónomo del mundo en el que todas las mujeres tenían derecho a votar en las elecciones parlamentarias; desde 1893. [2] Sin embargo, las mujeres no pudieron presentarse a las elecciones al parlamento hasta 1919, cuando tres mujeres se presentaron (sin éxito); véase 1919 en Nueva Zelanda .
La colonia de Australia del Sur permitió a las mujeres votar y presentarse a elecciones en 1895. En Europa, la última jurisdicción que concedió a las mujeres el derecho a voto fue el cantón suizo de Appenzell Rodas Interiores (AI), en 1991. Appenzell Rodas Interiores es el cantón suizo más pequeño con alrededor de 14.100 habitantes en 1990. Victoria – Colonia australiana de Victoria : las mujeres obtuvieron el derecho al voto involuntariamente gracias a la Ley Electoral (1863), y procedieron a votar en las elecciones del año siguiente. La ley fue enmendada en 1865 para corregir el error. [21]
Reino de Bohemia (actualmente Chequia) – Imperio austríaco: limitado a mujeres contribuyentes y mujeres en “profesiones académicas” a quienes se les permitió votar por poder y fueron elegibles para ser elegidas para el cuerpo legislativo en 1864. [20]
Estados Unidos – El Territorio de Utah aprobó una ley que otorgaba el derecho al voto a las mujeres. Las ciudadanas de Utah votaron en las elecciones municipales de esa primavera y en las elecciones generales del 1 de agosto, superando a las mujeres de Wyoming en las urnas. Raj británico , la presidencia de Bombay se convirtió en la segunda de las provincias de la India británica en otorgar a las mujeres el derecho a votar con restricciones de ingresos y propiedades y la incapacidad de presentarse a elecciones. [62]
La República Federal de Centroamérica (Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala y Honduras) estableció en su Constitución federal del 9 de septiembre de 1921 que las mujeres alfabetizadas casadas o viudas de 21 años o más, o las mujeres alfabetizadas solteras de 25 años o más, podían votar o ejercer cargos públicos siempre que cumplieran con los requisitos de propiedad. [63] Cuando la Federación se desintegró al año siguiente, las mujeres perdieron el derecho a votar. [64] [65]
