List of definitions of terms and concepts used in football or soccer
El fútbol (más conocido como soccer) se codificó por primera vez en 1863 en Inglaterra, aunque los juegos que implicaban patear una pelota eran evidentes considerablemente antes. [1] Desde entonces, ha surgido una gran cantidad de términos relacionados con el fútbol para describir varios aspectos del deporte y su cultura.
La evolución del deporte se ha reflejado en los cambios en esta terminología a lo largo del tiempo. Por ejemplo, el papel de un delantero interior en variantes de una formación 5-3-2 tiene muchos paralelismos con el de un centrocampista ofensivo, aunque las posiciones son, no obstante, distintas. [2] De manera similar, un central en una formación 5-3-2 puede compararse en muchos sentidos con un centrocampista de contención en una formación 4-1-3-2. [3]
En muchos casos, existen varios términos para el mismo concepto. Una de las razones de esto es la progresión del lenguaje a lo largo del tiempo. El deporte en sí, originalmente conocido como fútbol de asociación, ahora es más conocido por el término abreviado fútbol o fútbol , derivado de la palabra asociación . [4] Otros términos duplicados pueden atribuirse a diferencias entre las variedades del inglés. En Europa, donde prevalece el inglés británico , el logro de no conceder un gol durante todo un partido se conoce como una portería a cero. [5] En América del Norte, donde dominan el inglés estadounidense y canadiense , el mismo logro se conoce como una blanqueada. [6]
En ocasiones, las acciones de un individuo han llegado a la jerga futbolística común. Dos ejemplos notables son los goles de Diego Maradona en la victoria de Argentina en los cuartos de final de la Copa Mundial de 1986 contra Inglaterra . Después del partido, Maradona describió su primer gol (una mano que el árbitro no vio) como si hubiera sido marcado "un poco por la mano de Dios, otro poco por la cabeza de Maradona". [7] Su segundo gol fue posteriormente votado en una encuesta de la FIFA de 2002 como el Gol del siglo. Ahora se entiende ampliamente que ambas frases se refieren a los goles de ese partido. [8]
Criterios de inclusión
Este glosario sirve como punto de referencia para términos que se usan comúnmente en el fútbol y que tienen un significado específico del deporte. Busca evitar definir palabras y frases comunes en inglés que no tienen un significado especial dentro del fútbol. Las excepciones incluyen casos en los que el uso de una palabra o frase en el contexto del fútbol puede causar confusión a alguien que no esté familiarizado con el deporte (como portería a cero) o cuando es fundamental para comprender el deporte (como gol). Se evitan activamente las entradas sobre apodos relacionados con jugadores o equipos específicos. Otras frases sin entradas son clubes, rivalidades, organizaciones de medios u obras específicas, a menos que el nombre también tenga un significado más general dentro del fútbol, como es el caso de El Clásico y Roy of the Rovers.
0–9
12º hombre – Esta expresión tiene dos definiciones diferentes. Por lo general, se refiere a los aficionados que están presentes en un partido de fútbol, especialmente cuando hacen tanto ruido como para proporcionar una mayor motivación al equipo. 2–3–5 – Formación común del siglo XIX y principios del XX que consta de dos jugadores defensivos (antes conocidos como laterales), tres centrocampistas (mediocampistas) y cinco delanteros. También conocida como formación piramidal . Las variaciones incluyen la 2–3–2–3 (la formación Metodo o WW ), donde los delanteros interiores ocupan posiciones más profundas. [3]
4-4-2 : formación moderna común que se utiliza con cuatro defensores, cuatro centrocampistas y dos jugadores de ataque. Hay muchas variantes de esta formación, como el rombo 4-4-2, donde los cuatro centrocampistas se colocan en forma de rombo sin centrocampistas laterales, y el 4-1-3-2, donde se espera que un centrocampista adopte una posición defensiva, permitiendo que los otros tres se concentren en atacar. 4-5-1 – formación moderna común utilizada con cuatro defensores, cinco centrocampistas y un delantero. Regla 6+5 – propuesta adoptada por la FIFA en 2008. Diseñada para contrarrestar los efectos de la sentencia Bosman, que había aumentado considerablemente el número de jugadores extranjeros en los equipos europeos, la regla exigía que cada club alineara al menos seis jugadores que fueran elegibles para jugar en la selección nacional del país del club. [14] El Parlamento Europeo impidió que la regla entrara en vigor en la Unión Europea, declarándola incompatible con la legislación de la UE; su futuro sigue siendo incierto. [15]

Academia : modelo utilizado por algunos clubes profesionales para el desarrollo de jóvenes. Los jugadores jóvenes son contratados por el club y entrenados a un alto nivel, con la esperanza de que algunos se conviertan en futbolistas profesionales. [16] Algunos clubes brindan educación académica y futbolística en sus academias. [17] También conocida como academia juvenil o como cantera en los países de habla hispana.

Administración : proceso legal ( sanción ) en el que una empresa que no puede pagar a sus acreedores solicita protección legal temporal de ellos, mientras intenta reestructurar su deuda. Los clubes que entran en concurso de acreedores suelen sufrir una deducción de puntos. [18]
Ventaja : decisión tomada por el árbitro durante un partido, cuando un jugador recibe una falta, pero se permite que el juego continúe porque el equipo que sufrió la falta está en una mejor posición de la que habría estado si el árbitro hubiera detenido el juego. [19]
AFC – acrónimo de Confederación Asiática de Fútbol , [20] el organismo rector del deporte en Asia, o de club de fútbol de asociación , utilizado por equipos como el Sunderland AFC . [21] También puede significar club de fútbol atlético , como se ve en el AFC Bournemouth . [22]
Contra el curso del juego : un gol marcado, o una victoria o un empate logrados por un equipo que estaba siendo claramente superado. [23]
Puntuación global o: puntuación combinada de los partidos entre dos equipos en un partido de ida y vuelta. [24]
Todas las competiciones o todas las comps : se utiliza para describir el progreso estadístico de un equipo o jugador en varias ligas, partidos nacionales e internacionales a lo largo de una temporada, carrera u otro período de tiempo determinado; se utiliza particularmente cuando dichas competiciones se celebran simultáneamente entre sí en el calendario (por ejemplo, " Pelé anotó 66 goles en todas las competiciones en 1958"). Antifútbol : término peyorativo para un estilo de juego particularmente robusto y defensivo. [28]
Apertura y Clausura – formato de liga empleado por varias ligas de fútbol en América Latina, en el que la temporada tradicional de agosto a mayo se divide en dos torneos de liga separados, cada uno con su propio campeón. Apertura y Clausura son las siglas en español de "apertura" y "clausura". [29] [30]
Brazalete : usado por el capitán de un equipo para simbolizar ese rol. [31] En ocasiones, todo un equipo usa brazaletes negros en conmemoración de una muerte o un evento trágico. [32]
Asistencia : pase que conduce a que se marque un gol. [33]
Árbitro asistente : uno de los varios oficiales que ayudan al árbitro a controlar un partido. [34]
Atacante : generalmente se refiere a un delantero, [35] o cualquier jugador cercano a la línea de portería del equipo contrario.
Lejos – ver Hogar y lejos.
Regla de goles de visitante : se aplica el tie break en algunas competiciones con partidos de ida y vuelta. En los casos en que los resultados globales terminan empatados, el equipo que haya marcado más goles fuera de casa se considera ganador. [24]

Fondo de la red : portería en la que el balón suele quedar atrapado en el fondo de la red hasta que es recogido de nuevo. [36]
Regla del pase hacia atrás : regla introducida en las Reglas de Juego en 1992 para ayudar a acelerar el juego, que especifica que los porteros no pueden recoger el balón si un compañero de equipo lo devuelve intencionalmente. [37]
Tacón trasero : tipo de pase o tiro en el que un jugador usa el talón para impulsar la pelota hacia atrás, hacia otro jugador o hacia la portería. A veces se escribe talón trasero . [38]
Balón : objeto esférico que normalmente patean los jugadores de fútbol. Los balones que se utilizan en los partidos oficiales están estandarizados en cuanto a tamaño, peso y material, y se fabrican según las especificaciones establecidas en las Reglas de Juego. [39]
Recogedor de pelotas o recogepelotas : uno de varios niños estacionados alrededor del borde de la cancha, cuya función es ayudar a recuperar las pelotas que salen del juego. [40]
Recuperación del balón : el intento exitoso de un equipo de recuperar la posesión del balón. [41]
Balón de Oro es un premio de fútbol anual otorgado por la revista de noticias francesa France Football desde 1956 para honrar al jugador que se considera que tuvo el mejor rendimiento durante la temporada anterior. [42]
Barras bravas : grupos organizados de hinchas/hooligans en América Latina, similares al término europeo Ultras. [43]
Fútbol playa : variante del fútbol de asociación que se juega en una playa o en algún tipo de arena. [44] También conocido como fútbol playa o beasal .
Partidos a puerta cerrada : partidos en los que no hay espectadores. Fue la norma durante gran parte de la pandemia de COVID-19 . Puede imponerse como una forma de sanción para los clubes cuyos hinchas se han comportado de manera inapropiada. [45] A veces, estos partidos se organizan entre clubes para ayudar a acelerar el regreso de un jugador a su forma física. [ cita requerida ]
Banquillo : zona situada en el borde del terreno de juego donde se sientan los suplentes y los entrenadores de un equipo, que suele consistir en un banco cubierto o una fila de asientos. Más formalmente conocido como banquillo de suplentes . [46] También se le denomina a veces dugout . [47]
Doblar : atributo de habilidad en el que los jugadores golpean la pelota de una manera que aplica efecto, lo que hace que el vuelo de la pelota se curve o se doble en el aire. Los jugadores que son especialmente hábiles para lograr esto a menudo serán los lanzadores de tiros libres designados de su equipo, ya que pueden doblar la pelota alrededor de las paredes mientras realizan tiros a portería. Jugador de partidos importantes : término que describe a un jugador que a menudo pasa desapercibido en partidos normales pero que aparece en partidos importantes y supera en cierta medida las expectativas en los "partidos importantes". [50]
Reserva – acto de anotar al infractor en una infracción que merece una amonestación, lo que resulta en una tarjeta amarilla. [51]
Botinero : jugador joven que, además de su entrenamiento futbolístico, debe realizar tareas menores, como limpiar las botas de los jugadores del primer equipo. [52]
Botas : calzado del jugador, normalmente con tacos.
Sentencia Bosman : sentencia del Tribunal de Justicia de la Unión Europea relacionada con las transferencias de jugadores que permite a los futbolistas profesionales de la Unión Europea trasladarse libremente a otro club al final de su contrato con su equipo actual. Dictada en 1995, también prohibía el movimiento restringido de miembros de la UE dentro de las ligas de los estados miembros. Lleva el nombre de Jean-Marc Bosman , el demandante en ese caso judicial. Embotellador : se refiere a un jugador o equipo que inicialmente juega a un nivel razonablemente bueno, pero que, debido a errores, termina en una mala forma al final de la temporada.
Caja – ver Área de penalti.
Boxing Day : día después de Navidad . Suele ser un día en el que se juegan muchos partidos en Inglaterra como parte del calendario festivo. [50]
Box-to-box : jugadores con la capacidad de influir en el juego tanto defensiva como ofensivamente o, más generalmente, en ambos extremos del campo. [54]
Doblete : cuando un jugador marca dos goles en un mismo partido. [8]
Break – maniobra de ataque en la que varios miembros de un equipo defensor obtienen posesión de la pelota y de repente contraatacan en la mitad del campo de su oponente, abrumando a la defensa de su oponente en mayor número, generalmente como resultado de que los defensores oponentes están fuera de posición después de haber apoyado a sus atacantes. Equipo B : a nivel de clubes, una variante de un equipo de reserva. A nivel internacional, se refiere a partidos ocasionales entre selecciones nacionales sin restricciones de edad pero por debajo del nivel más alto, generalmente para probar jugadores inexpertos en un entorno similar para medir su preparación para el equipo mayor o, a veces, utilizando solo jugadores de una división en particular. Gorra : aspecto que presenta un jugador de una selección nacional. Tiene su origen en la tradicional presentación de una gorra a los jugadores británicos que participaban en partidos internacionales. [60] [61]
Cap-tied – término que se utiliza cuando un jugador ha representado a una selección nacional y, como consecuencia, no es elegible para jugar con otra. Un juego de palabras con el término más antiguo Cup-tied
Capitán – jugador elegido para dirigir un equipo y, en un partido, participar en el lanzamiento de la moneda antes del inicio del juego. [62] También conocido como skipper . [35]
Gerente interino : persona elegida para realizar funciones gerenciales cuando no se instala un gerente permanente. [63]
Catenaccio : sistema táctico que pone énfasis en la defensa. En italiano, catenaccio significa "cerrojo de puerta", lo que implica una defensa de línea defensiva altamente organizada y eficaz para evitar goles. [64]

Círculo central : círculo de 10 yardas de radio alrededor del punto central. [65]
Punto central – marca en el centro del terreno de juego desde donde se inicia el juego al comienzo de cada tiempo y se reinicia después de marcar un gol. [65]
Desafío – ver tackle.
Canal : espacio vacío entre el zaguero y el defensor central cuando una defensa juega con cuatro defensores. Se dice que los delanteros que juegan por las bandas actúan "en los canales". [66]
Liga de Campeones – torneo anual que se disputa en toda la confederación y en el que participan los campeones y otros equipos ganadores de las ligas nacionales de esa confederación. El término puede referirse a los torneos que se celebran en la AFC, [67] la CAF, [68] la CONCACAF [69] o la OFC, [70] pero se utiliza más comúnmente en referencia a la competición organizada por la UEFA. Oportunidad : situación en la que un jugador atacante puede disparar al arco, con una posibilidad realista de marcar. También se denomina oportunidad . [73]
Chip – tiro o centro de trayectoria alta, ejecutado encajando el pie debajo del balón. [74]

Portería a cero : cuando un portero o un equipo no conceden ningún gol durante un partido. [5]
Despeje : cuando un jugador patea el balón lejos de la portería que está defendiendo. [35]
Club : nombre colectivo de un equipo de fútbol y de la organización que lo dirige. [75]
Gol de consolación : cuando un equipo perdedor marca un gol que no tiene impacto en el resultado final.
Defensa compacta : una táctica defensiva relacionada con la compacidad [76]
Copropiedad : sistema por el cual dos clubes de fútbol son propietarios conjuntos del contrato de un jugador, aunque el jugador esté registrado para jugar solo en un club. [77]
CONCACAF – acrónimo de la Confederación de Fútbol Asociación de Norte, Centroamérica y el Caribe , el organismo rector del deporte en América del Norte, Central y el Caribe; se pronuncia "kon-ka-kaff". [20]
CONMEBOL – acrónimo de la Asociación Sudamericana de Fútbol, el organismo rector del deporte en América del Sur; se pronuncia "kon-me-bol". [20]
Bandera de esquina : se colocan banderas en cada una de las cuatro esquinas del campo para ayudar a marcar los límites del área de juego. [65]
Saque de esquina : tiro ejecutado desde un radio de una yarda alrededor del banderín de esquina; método para reiniciar el juego cuando un jugador coloca el balón detrás de su propia línea de gol sin que se marque un gol. [35]
Pasillo de incertidumbre : centro o pase que se realiza en el área frente al portero y detrás de la última línea de defensa. [78]
Contraataque o contraataque – ver ruptura.
Contrapresión o contrapresión – Si bien la presión es una táctica aplicada por un equipo en su formación defensiva, la contrapresión se aplica inmediatamente después de perder el balón para recuperar rápidamente la posesión. [79]
Centro : entrega del balón al área penal por parte del equipo atacante, generalmente desde el área entre el área penal y la línea de banda. [35]
Barra transversal : barra horizontal que atraviesa la parte superior de la portería. [80]
Giro de Cruyff : tipo de giro que lleva el nombre del holandés Johan Cruyff ; diseñado para despistar a un oponente. En concreto, el balón se patea suavemente hacia un lado con un pie, pero detrás de la pierna de apoyo del jugador. [81]
Cuauhtemiña – jugada de habilidad atribuida al jugador mexicano Cuauhtémoc Blanco , [82] que realizó notablemente en la Copa Mundial de 1998. [ 83] Cuando varios jugadores intentaron tacklearlo, atrapó el balón entre sus pies y saltó sobre ellos, soltando el balón en el aire y aterrizando con él bajo control. [83]
Serie de victorias en una competición de copa, generalmente aplicada a equipos de divisiones inferiores. [85 ]
Competición de copa : cuando un jugador no es elegible para jugar en una competición de copa porque ha jugado para un equipo diferente anteriormente en la misma competición. [86]
Cupset – Un acrónimo moderno de cup y surprise , que se utiliza a menudo en el periodismo deportivo para referirse a la victoria de un equipo desfavorecido en una competición eliminatoria. [87] [88]

D – arco semicircular en el borde del área penal, utilizado para indicar la parte de la distancia de 10 yardas alrededor del punto penal que se encuentra fuera del área penal. En las Reglas de Juego se lo denomina "arco penal". [65]
Balón muerto : situación en la que el juego se reanuda con el balón parado, como en un tiro libre. [92]
Profundo : describe el posicionamiento de un jugador (o una línea de jugadores, como la defensa o el mediocampo) que juega más cerca de su propia portería de lo que lo haría tradicionalmente. Una defensa puede retroceder contra un equipo con jugadores atacantes rápidos, para reducir la cantidad de espacio detrás de la defensa para que los jugadores de ritmo rápido ingresen. [93] Los jugadores atacantes o mediocampistas que tradicionalmente juegan profundos pueden describirse como delanteros retrasados o creadores de juego retrasados .

Derbi : partido entre dos rivales, generalmente locales. [94]
Tiro libre directo : se concede al equipo que ha recibido la falta después de ciertas faltas "penales" enumeradas. [96] Se puede marcar un gol directamente con un tiro libre directo.
Trabajo sucio – el tipo de juego realizado por un mediocampista defensivo – como hacer tackles en el mediocampo, dar pases cortos a la banda y romper los movimientos de ataque de los oponentes – que es necesario para que un equipo tenga éxito, pero que rara vez recibe reconocimiento o aclamación y no se considera "glamoroso". Disenso : infracción de las Reglas de Juego, en la que un jugador utiliza lenguaje o gestos ofensivos hacia los árbitros. En casos extremos, puede dar lugar a la emisión de tarjetas amarillas o rojas. [98]
Buceo – forma de trampa, a veces empleada por un jugador atacante para ganar un tiro libre o un penalti. [92] Cuando un oponente le disputa el balón, el jugador se arroja al suelo como si hubiera recibido una falta, en un intento de engañar al árbitro para que piense que se ha cometido una falta. [99] También conocido como flop .
Hacer un Leeds : cuando un club incurre en deudas sustanciales debido a gastos demasiado ambiciosos y, posteriormente, desciende una o más divisiones. Se llama así por el Leeds United , que llegó a las semifinales de la Liga de Campeones de la UEFA en 2001 como un club de la Premier League, pero jugó en la Football League One solo seis años después. Luego, el jugador permitirá intencionalmente que el balón corra hacia un compañero de equipo cercano sin tocarlo, confundiendo al oponente sobre qué jugador tiene el balón. [106]

Partido de principio a fin : emocionante y lleno de acción. Generalmente implica suspenso, ya que el principio y el fin indican que ambos equipos están creando oportunidades de gol en lados opuestos del campo. [50]
Noche europea : partido nocturno en una competición de clubes de la UEFA . [110]

Expurgar : anular todos los partidos jugados por un equipo determinado hasta un determinado punto de una temporada de liga y eliminarlo de la tabla de la liga, recalculando los registros de todos los demás equipos en consecuencia. The Poznań – celebration which involves fans turning their backs to the pitch, joining arms and jumping up and down in unison. It takes its name from Polish club Lech Poznań, whose fans are thought to be the first to celebrate in this way.[citation needed]
Pre-season – period leading up to the start of a league season. Clubs generally prepare for a new season with intensive training, playing various friendlies, and sometimes by attempting to sign new players.[261][262]
Premier League – name of the top division of English football since 1992.[263] The phrase can also be used generically, or as a translation for leagues in other countries.[264][265]
Pressing – A tactic of defending players moving forward towards the ball, rather than remaining in position near their goal. They may pressure the player that has the ball or get close to other opponents in order to remove passing options. A successful press will recover the ball quickly and further up the pitch, or force the opponents to make an inaccurate long kick. However, if the opponents are able to pass the ball forward, fewer defending players are protecting the goal, making pressing a high-risk, high-reward strategy.[266][267]
Professional – player who is engaged by a club under a professional contract and who is paid a wage by the club to focus on their sport in lieu of other employment.[268]
Professional foul – foul committed by a player who is aware that they are about to intentionally commit the foul, and who does so having calculated the risk, and determined that committing the foul and taking a yellow card or even a red card will be more beneficial to their team than if the player allowed their opponent to continue unimpeded.[230]
Project Mbappé – concept in which parents have the fantasy objective of turning their child into a star footballer via intense coaching at an early age. The term came about as a social media phenomenon, and traces its name to French player Kylian Mbappé.[269]
Promedios – relegation system based on a points per game average over multiple seasons.[270]
Promotion – when a club moves up to a higher division in the league hierarchy as a result of being one of the best teams in their division at the end of a season.[230]
Pub team / pub league – see Sunday league football
Pyramid – may refer to the 2–3–5 formation, or to a football pyramid, a hierarchical structure of leagues.

Rabona – method of kicking the football whereby the kicking leg is wrapped around the back of the standing leg.[271]
Recovery – (in defense) the transition from defensive pressure to a defensive block.[272] See also Ball recovery and Injury recovery.
Red card – awarded to a player for either a single serious cautionable offence or following two yellow cards.[230] The player receiving the red card is compelled to leave the game for the rest of its duration, and that player's team is not allowed to replace him with another player. A player receiving the red card is said to have been sent off or ejected.[273]
Reducer – hard tackle, usually early in a game, meant to intimidate an attacking player.[274]
Referee – the official who presides over a match, with the help of assistant referees and the fourth official.[230]
Replacement – see substitute
Relegation – when a club moves down to a lower division in the league hierarchy as a result of gaining the fewest points in their division at the end of a season.[275]
Reserve team – team which is considered supplemental to a club's senior team. Matches between reserve teams often include a combination of first team players that have not featured in recent games, as well as academy and trial players.[276] While some nations restrict reserve teams to matches against one another in a separate system,[277] others allow reserve teams (commonly suffixed with 'B' or 'II' to differentiate them from the senior team) to play in the same football pyramid as the senior team, but usually not allowed to move up to the same league level or play in the same cups, and with varying restrictions on the criteria of players used.[278][279][280] Not to be confused with feeder clubs or farm teams which are separate clubs in a co-operative agreement. Some of the biggest clubs operate reserves, feeders and loans for their developing players.
Retired number – squad number which is no longer used as a form of recognising an individual player's loyal service to the club. Sometimes a number is retired as a memorial after their death.[281][282]
Ronglish – phrases associated used by manager and punditRon Atkinson for an action during a match. Expressions used by Atkinson include similes and verbal non sequiturs.[283]
Round-robin tournament – competition in which each contestant meets all other contestants in turn.[284] A competition where each team plays the other teams twice is known as a double round-robin.[285]
Rounding the 'keeper – attacking move in which a player attempts to dribble the ball around the goalkeeper, hoping to leave an open goal.[286]
Route one – direct, attacking style of football which generally involves taking the most direct route to goal.[287]
Roy of the Rovers stuff – event during a game, or an entire game, in which a player or team is seen to have overcome some sort of extreme adversity prior to victory, or secured victory in an overtly spectacular or dramatic fashion, especially against a team generally considered to be "stronger".[288] The term originates from the long-running football-themed English comic strip Roy of the Rovers, in which such events were commonplace.[289]
Row Z – the hypothetical destination of a forceful clearance, on the assumption that rows in which spectators are seated are ordered alphabetically so that row Z is the furthest from the pitch. Also refers to a shot which goes a long way over the crossbar.[290]

Safety – see Survive.
Save – when a goalkeeper prevents the football from crossing the goal line between the goalposts.[275]
Scissor kick – see Bicycle kick.
Scorpion kick – acrobatic kick of the type first notably performed as a save by René Higuita in 1995 while playing for Colombia at Wembley stadium against England.[291]
Scratch – a term used in the nineteenth century to indicate a team had withdrawn from a competition and granting their opponents a walkover. Also used in horse racing.
Screamer – a term used to describe a fiercely-hit shot on goal from long range.[292]
Scrimmage – a term used in the nineteenth century for what would now be called a goalmouth scramble. In the early days of newspaper coverage of the sport, reporters were often unable to identify the scorer of a goal under such circumstances and would report simply that the goal had been scored "from a scrimmage". For this reason, the scorers of several goals in early FA Cup finals are unknown.[293]
Seal dribble – type of dribble, in which a player flicks the ball up from the ground onto their head and then proceeds to run past opponents whilst bouncing the ball on top of their forehead, somewhat imitating a performing seal.[294]
Season – the time period during which primary competitions in a certain country are played. In most European countries the season starts around September and ends in May, with a winter break in December and January. In other countries the season is played within a single calendar year. It is often customary to use the Super Cup to mark the beginning of a season while the Cup final usually marks its end.
Second season syndrome – phrase sometimes used by commentators in English football to refer to a downturn in fortunes for a football club two seasons after its promotion to the Premier League.[295]
Sending off – see red card.
Separation – space that is found or created by an attacking player in the offensive run of play, either with or without possession of the ball.[296]
Set piece – dead ball routine that the attacking team has specifically practised, such as a free kick taken close to the D.[275]
Shielding – defensive technique, in which a defensive player positions their body between the ball and an attacking opponent, in order to prevent that opponent from reaching the ball.[134] At all times while shielding the ball, the defender must maintain control of the ball within a nominal playing distance, otherwise the technique becomes obstruction, and a foul is called.[228]
Shin pads or Shin guards – mandatory piece of equipment, usually made of plastic or rubber, worn underneath the socks in order to protect the shins.[297]
Shoot – specialised kicking technique mainly used by forwards. The purpose of shooting is to get the ball past the goal line (usually beating the goalkeeper in the process), though some shots may be made in order to win corners or force the keeper to deflect the ball into the path of a teammate – this will only be the case if scoring directly from the shot seems unlikely. See Shooting (association football). To attempt to shoot is to take a shot.[35][275]
Shootout – see penalty shootout.
Shutout – see Clean sheet.
Side netting – outside of the net part of the goal, which stretches back from the goalpost to the stanchion.[298]
Silver goal – rule which was briefly in use between 2002 and 2004 in some UEFA competitions when elimination matches were level after 90 minutes. In extra time, the match would end if one team was winning after fifteen minutes of extra time. Unlike the golden goal, the game did not finish the moment a goal was scored.[275]
Silverware – a slang term for the trophies teams receive for winning competitions
Simulation – see diving.
Sitter – an instance when a player has a clear goal-scoring opportunity, but misses the shot. A sitter is often characterized by an open-goal miss.[50]
Six-a-side football – variant of association football adapted for play in an arena such as a turf-covered hockey arena or a skating rink. Unlike in futsal the playing field is surrounded by a wall instead of touch lines. The ball can be played directly off the wall, which eliminates many frequent stoppages that would normally result in throw-ins, goal kicks and corner kicks. Played by two teams with 6 players each.[299] Also known as arena soccer, indoor football, indoor soccer or simply as six-a-side.
Six-pointer – game between teams both competing for a title, promotion or relegation, whereby the relative difference between winning and losing can be six points.[300]
Slide tackle – type of tackle where the defending player slides along the ground to tackle their opponent.[134]
Soccer – alternative name for the sport of association football. Originating in Britain, and derived from the "s-o-c" in "association", the word was commonly used in the UK until the 1970s.[301] Now it is used most commonly in countries where the term "football" is used to refer to a different code, for instance American football in the United States,[302] and Australian rules football and rugby league in Australia,[303] as well as in Ireland at such times when confusion with Gaelic football may occur.[304][305] See also: Names for association football.
Soft – term that indicates the referee made a potentially wrong decision regarding a foul.[50] Can also be used to say easy or weak.
Squad numbers – numerical markings on players' shirts used to distinguish individual players in a game of football. First used in 1928,[306] and initially assigned to distinguish positions in a formation, they gradually became associated with individual players, irrespective of where they are positioned on the pitch.[307] This gave rise to the custom of retiring numbers.[282]
Squad rotation system – managerial device, whereby the manager selects from a large number of players in first team games, rather than having a regular first eleven.[308]
Square ball – when a ball is passed between teammates laterally, across the field of play.[309]
Squeaky-bum time – tense final stages of a league competition, especially from the point of view of the title contenders, and clubs facing promotion and relegation.[310] Coined by Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.[310]
Stanchion – part of the framework of the goal which holds the upper rear part of the net in the air and away from the crossbar.[311]
Step over or stepover – skill move performed by an attacking player in which the player with the ball will move their foot over the ball without making contact with it.[275] The intent of the move is to confuse a defender into thinking that the attacking player is moving with the ball in a certain direction; when the defender changes direction, the attacker will quickly change direction.[312]
Stoppage-time – an additional number of minutes at the end of each half, determined by the match officials, to compensate for time lost during the game. Informally known by various names, including injury time and added time.[35][313]
Straight red – a penalty given by the referee in punishment for a serious offence that is deemed to be worse than a booking and results in immediate sending off of a player
Street football – informal variations of the sport. Games often forgo many requirements of a formal game of football, such as a large field, field markings, goal apparatus and corner flags, eleven players per team, or match officials (referee and assistant referees). Synonymous with jumpers for goalposts.
Striker – one of the four main positions in football. Strikers are the players closest to the opposition goal, with the principal role of scoring goals. Also known as forward or attacker.[35]
Studs – small points on the underneath of a player's boots to help prevent slipping.[314] A tackle in which a player directs their studs towards an opponent is referred to as a studs-up challenge, and is a foul punishable by a red card.[315]
Stunner – see screamer.
Substitute – a player who is brought on to the pitch during a match in exchange for an existing player.[35]
Subbed – A player who is withdrawn from the field of play and replaced by a substitute is said to have been subbed or subbed off. An oncoming substitute may be referred to as being subbed on.
Sudden death – feature of penalty shootouts. If scores are level after each side has taken the standard five penalties, the teams continue to take one kick each until one scores and the other misses, at which point the shootout immediately ends.[316]
Super Hat-trick – when a player scores four goals in a single match.
Supporter – see fan.
Sunday league football – term used mainly in the British Isles in respect of amateur leagues played on Sunday rather than the more usual Saturday, often generalised as being of very low quality and including unfit or hungover players in teams representing public houses ("pub leagues"); organisational standards and skill levels actually vary greatly. Also used in a derogatory sense to deride professional teams' poor performances, or entire leagues seen as weak (often by English observers of Scottish football).[317][318][319] See also: farmers league.
Survive – when a team at risk of relegation secures enough points to guarantee their position in that league for the following season. Also known as securing safety.[320]
Suspension – a punishment under which players are not permitted to play in one or more of their team's games if they are sent off or reach a specified total number of bookings in previous games[275]
Sweeper – defender whose role is to protect the space between the goalkeeper and the rest of the defence. Also referred to as libero.[64]

Tackle – method of a player winning the ball back from an opponent, achieved either by using a leg to wrest possession from the opponent, or making a slide tackle to knock the ball away. A tackle in which the opposing player is kicked before the ball is punishable by either a free kick or penalty kick. Dangerous tackles may also result in a yellow or red card.[275] See also reducer.
(to) Take a touch – to control the ball with a legal part of the body before passing or shooting.
(it) Takes a touch – when the ball, often unintentionally, takes a deflection off a player to alter its intended trajectory.
Tactical periodization – football training methodology developed around 35 years ago by Vítor Frade, a sports science professor from Porto University in Portugal.
Target man – type of striker.[321] Usually tall, with a strong build and good heading ability, capable of controlling or attacking balls in the air. Target men give the forward line different options in how to attack the goal, and are often used to hold up the ball or play layoff passes to their teammates.[322]
Taylor Report – document written by Lord Taylor concerning the causes and aftermath of the Hillsborough disaster in 1989. Best known for its recommendation that top division stadiums in England and Scotland phase out their terraces and become all-seater.[323]
Technical area – area within which the manager must remain while coaching their team during a match,[324] marked by white lines at the side of the pitch.[275]
Telstar – match ball designed by Adidas for the 1970 FIFA World Cup. The first ball to use a truncated icosahedron design, with 12 black and 20 white patches intentionally used to improve visibility on black-and-white TV sets.[325] The design remains common in club crests and decorations, even though modern match balls look considerably different. Known as bubamara (ladybug) in countries where Serbo-Croatian is spoken.[326]
Terrace – standing area of a stadium, consisting of a series of concrete steps which are erected for spectators to stand on. Often occupied by ultras. Terraces have been phased out in some countries, over safety concerns.[327]
Testimonial match – friendly match organised in honour of a player due to long service, usually 10 years at a single club.[328]
Third man running – when a team is attacking, in addition to the passer and intended receiver of the ball, a player will take part in the movement as an alternative receiver or third man. On completion of the move, the passer will become the third man.[329][330]
Three points for a win – point system in which three points are awarded to the team winning a match, with no points to the losing team. If the game is drawn, each team receives one point. Replacing the previous convention of two and one points awarded for wins and draws respectively, the system is intended to encourage teams to attack in search of a win, rather than settle for a draw.[331]
Through-ball – pass from the attacking team that goes straight through the opposition's defence to a teammate. Invariably the teammate will run onto the ball – standing behind the defenders when the ball was played would result in offside being called.[332]
Throw-in – method of restarting play. Involves a player throwing the ball from behind a touchline after it has been kicked out by an opponent.[333]
Tie – see cup tie
Tifo – originally the Italian word for the phenomenon of supporting a football team, today mainly used for any spectacular choreography displayed by supporters on the terraces of a stadium in connection with an association football match.[334] Primarily arranged by ultras.
Tiki-taka – style of play characterised by short passing and movement, working the ball through various channels and maintaining possession. The style is primarily associated with Spanish club Barcelona and the Spain national team.[335] See also One touch.
Toe punt – method of kicking the ball with the tip of the foot. Also known as a toe poke.[336]
Too good to go down – belief, often misguided, that the ability within a team will preclude it from relegation.[337]
Top corner – the parts of the goal immediately below the two 90° angles where the crossbar and posts intersect. Generally considered the most difficult part of the goal for a goalkeeper to reach.[338]
Top flight – the league at the highest level of a league system.[339]
Total Football – tactical theory in which any outfield player can take over the role of any other player in a team. Invented by the Dutch coach Rinus Michels, Total Football was popularised by Ajax and the Netherlands national team in the early 1970s.[340]
Touch-line – markings along the side of the pitch, indicating the boundaries of the playing area. Throw-ins are taken from behind this line.[65]
Tracksuit manager – a manager who has a tendency to work with players on the training ground, spending a significant amount of time on improving players' abilities.[341]
Transfer window – period during the year in which a football club can transfer players from other countries into their playing staff.[342]
Trap – skill performed by a player, whereupon the player uses their foot (or, less commonly, their chest or thigh) to bring an airborne or falling ball under control.[275]
Travelling army – expression used by commentators for any set of away fans – that is, fans who travelled to the match to support their team.[343] Often a team's travelling army are referred to as the 12th man.[344][345]
Treble – achieved by a club that wins three major trophies in a single season. Competitions generally considered as part of a treble include the top tier domestic league, domestic cup and continental cup.[346] Trebles achieved without winning a continental competition are known as domestic trebles.[347] UEFA defines a European Treble as the feat of winning all three seasonal club confederation competitions.[348]
Trialist – player who represents a club on a trial basis, often in the hope of being offered a contract.[349]
Two-footed tackle – challenge where a player, often a defender, tackles their opponent with both feet. Such tackles often result in a foul being called, if the tackling player is deemed not to be in control of his or her body.[350]
U
UEFA – acronym for Union of European Football Associations, the governing body of the sport in Europe; pronounced "you-eh-fa".[20]
Underdog – the team that is not expected to win a particular game or competition.[351]
Under the cosh – a team's defence experiences a period of concerted or unrelenting attacking play.[352]
Ultras – type of football fans predominantly found in Europe renowned for their fanatical support and elaborate displays at football matches. These displays often include the use of flares, vocal support in large groups, displays of banners at stadium terraces and other forms of tifo choreography.[353]
Upset – game in which the underdog defeats a higher ranked team.[354]
Utility player – player who can be used in different positions or for different roles transcending the traditional division of outfield players into defenders, midfielders and strikers.[355]
V
Vanishing spray – short-lasting aerosol paint applied to the grass by the referee to mark the 10 yard exclusion area at a free kick.[356]
Video assistant referee (VAR) – a long-campaigned method of determining close decisions, such as whether a ball crosses the goalline, using instant replays provided by cameras located at several angles. It was officially included into the Laws of the Game in 2018.[357]
Volley – pass or shot in which the ball is struck before it touches the ground.[90]
Wall or defensive wall – row of defensive players who line up 10 yards away from a free kick, covering a portion of the goal, with the intent making it more difficult for an attacking player to have a shot on goal direct from the free kick.[90]
Want-away – player who has made public their intentions to leave their current club.[359]
War chest – the amount of money a manager has been given by a club's chairman, owner or investors to acquire new players.[360]
Webster ruling – 2006 court case which stipulated that players are able to unilaterally walk away from a contract after a fixed period, regardless of the duration of the contract itself. Named after Andy Webster.[361] Compare Bosman ruling.
Wing – area of the pitch that runs parallel to the sidelines.[362]
Winger – wide midfield player whose primary focus is to provide crosses into the penalty area.[90] Alternatively known as a wide midfielder.[362]
Winter break – period between December and January in which competitive football is suspended and which cuts some national or continental seasons in half. Known as "year-end" or "summer break" in the Southern Hemisphere.[363]
Withdrawn – A forward or attacking midfielder who plays deeper than the name of their conventional position suggests. A forward or attacking midfielder who drops deep may be described as playing in a withdrawn role.[364] Withdrawn may also be used to refer to a player who has been substituted: "the injured midfielder was withdrawn on the hour mark".
Woodwork – the posts and the crossbar, commonly used in phrases like "the ball came back off the woodwork", meaning a shot at goal struck either the post or the crossbar and remained in play.[90] The expression is still widely used even though goals are no longer made of wood.[365]
Worldy – a goal which is considered to be world class, e.g. "he scored with a worldy".[366] Also used to describe what is considered to be a world-class performance by a player not well known in the game, playing at a lower level.[367]
Work rate – the extent to which a player contributes to running and chasing in a match while not in possession of the ball.[368] Sometimes spelt workrate or work-rate.[369][370]
X-rated challenge – malicious tackle when a player has possible motivation to injure an opponent.[375]
Y
Yellow card – shown by the referee to a player who commits a cautionable offence. If a player commits two cautionable offences in a match, they are shown a second yellow card, followed by a red card, and are then sent off.[376] Also known as a caution or a booking.[35]
Youth – a player (or team of players) contracted under the youth system, generally under the age of 18 and not playing professionally although youth players can appear for the first-team.[377][378] Also known as an "apprentice".[379]
Yo-yo club – club that is regularly promoted and relegated between higher and lower league levels.[380] Also known in other languages as elevator team, for instance Fahrstuhlmannschaften in German.[381]
Z
Zonal marking – system of marking, in which each player is responsible for an area of the pitch, rather than an opposing player.[216]
Zona mista – (Italian pronunciation:[ˈdzɔːnaˈmista]), tactical theory in which any outfield player can make simultaneously use of defensive individual marking related to catenaccio, the zonal game and continuous attack on the spaces characteristic from total football. The introduction of this system in Italian football has been attributed to Gigi Radice and Giovanni Trapattoni, being popularised by Juventus and the Italy national team in the late 1970s and early 1980s.[382]
