No obstante, desde 2004 la revista dividió las categorías en dos grupos: las principales —seleccionadas por los lectores— y las honoríficas —otorgadas por el equipo editorial de Metal Hammer—.

Wilfried F. Rimensberger, por aquel entonces editor en jefe de la publicación alemana Musik Szene en el Reino Unido, fundó la revista musical Metal Hammer en 1983.

Al año siguiente, estas fueron divididas en dos grupos: las principales —escogidas por votación popular— y las honoríficas —elegidas por el equipo editorial de la revista—.

Además, la revista entregó por primera vez las categorías Ícono y a la mejor banda de metal.
