Los nombres de las estrellas chinas ( chino : 星名, xīng míng ) se nombran según la antigua astronomía y astrología china . El cielo se divide en mansiones estelares (星宿, xīng xiù , también traducido como "logias") y asterismos (星官, xīng guān ). La eclíptica se divide en cuatro sectores que están asociados con los Cuatro Símbolos , guardianes en la mitología china , y además en 28 mansiones. Las estrellas alrededor del polo norte celeste se agrupan en tres recintos (垣, yuán ). [1] El sistema de 283 asterismos bajo los Tres Recintos y las Veintiocho Mansiones fue establecido por Chen Zhuo del período de los Tres Reinos , quien sintetizó las constelaciones antiguas y los asterismos creados por los primeros astrónomos Shi Shen , Gan De y Wuxian . [2] Desde las dinastías Han y Jin , a las estrellas se les han dado números de referencia dentro de sus asterismos en un sistema similar a las designaciones de Bayer o Flamsteed , para que se puedan identificar estrellas individuales. [3] Por ejemplo, a Deneb (α Cyg) se la conoce como 天津四 ( Tiān Jīn Sì , la Cuarta Estrella del Vado Celestial ).
En la dinastía Qing, el conocimiento chino del cielo mejoró con la llegada de los mapas estelares europeos. Yixiang Kaocheng , compilado a mediados del siglo XVIII por el entonces viceministro de Ritos Ignaz Kögler , amplió el catálogo de estrellas a más de 3000 estrellas. Las estrellas recién añadidas (增星, zēng xīng ) se denominaron 增一 ( zēng yī , primera estrella añadida), 增二 ( zēng èr , segunda estrella añadida), etc. Por ejemplo, a γ Cephei se la conoce como 少衛增八 ( Shào Wèi Zēng Bā , octava estrella añadida de la Segunda Guardia Imperial ). Es posible que a algunas estrellas se les haya asignado más de un nombre debido a las imprecisiones de los mapas estelares tradicionales.
Aunque hay poco desacuerdo sobre la correspondencia entre los nombres de estrellas tradicionales chinos y occidentales para las estrellas más brillantes, muchos asterismos, en particular los originales de Gan De, se crearon principalmente con fines astrológicos y solo se pueden asignar a estrellas muy tenues. [4] El primer intento de mapear completamente las constelaciones chinas fue realizado por Paul Tsuchihashi a fines del siglo XIX. En 1981, basado en Yixiang Kaocheng y Yixiang Kaocheng Xubian , el primer mapa completo de estrellas y constelaciones chinas fue publicado por Yi Shitong (伊世同). [5]
