IT Journalism Awards

The IT Journalism Awards, nicknamed the Lizzies, are Australian media awards for information technology-related topics.

History

Founded in 2003,[1][2][3]

The event has been sponsored by a variety of commercial sponsors over the years, with naming rights changing to reflect the biggest one:

Description

The IT Journalism Awards are awards for information technology-related topics published by Australian media.[12] They are produced by the media intelligence platform Influencing, and are free to enter, supported by major sponsor Samsung. Judging is done by peers. In 2024, there were 23 categories and 140 entrants.[13]

Categories

The two top titles, for Best Journalist and Best Title, are popularly known as "Gold Lizzies".[14][15][16][17] Gold and bronze statuettes of the frilled-neck lizard are awarded to winners, since local IT media nicknamed the awards "lizards".[5]

As of 2023, the awards are labelled the Samsung Australian IT Journalism Awards,[2] and include the following categories:[18][10]

Winners

Prominent winners in recent years include ABC News,[19] the Australian Financial Review,[20] 2021,[21] and 2022.[22] The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age journalists.[23]

The awards are regarded as "prestigious" and "key",[23][19] and highly valued by smaller outlets, such as Women Love Tech, as well as the individual journalists[24][25][26] and gaming media.[27][28][29][30] IT News, which won the Gold Lizzy for Best Title in 2021, called it "the most coveted award across all categories in Australia's business and technology press", in a large field of major press outlets.[25]
