Este artículo contiene los resultados de las primarias presidenciales y asambleas partidarias republicanas de 2012 , que dieron como resultado la nominación de Mitt Romney como candidato republicano a la presidencia de los Estados Unidos . Las primarias republicanas de 2012 fueron los procesos de selección mediante los cuales el Partido Republicano eligió a los delegados que asistirían a la Convención Nacional Republicana de 2012 del 27 al 30 de agosto. La serie de primarias , asambleas partidarias y convenciones estatales culminó en la convención nacional, donde los delegados emitieron sus votos para seleccionar formalmente a un candidato. Siete candidatos principales competían por ser el candidato. Michele Bachmann fue la primera en abandonar la carrera, poniendo fin a su campaña tras un pobre desempeño en Iowa . Jon Huntsman se retiró de la carrera tras quedar tercero en las primarias de New Hampshire . Rick Perry se retiró después de Iowa y New Hampshire, pero antes de las primarias de Carolina del Sur tras obtener malos resultados en las encuestas. Rick Santorum suspendió su campaña en abril después de que las encuestas mostraran una fuerte posibilidad de que perdiera su estado natal de Pensilvania ante Mitt Romney, y la condición de su hija Bella empeorara. Newt Gingrich se retiró después de que la falta de fondos le impidiera seguir adelante con una campaña fuerte. El 14 de mayo de 2012, Ron Paul anunció que su campaña cambiaría a una estrategia de acumulación de delegados. Lista de la convención
El tradicional pase de lista de los estados, que muestra la distribución final de delegados para cada candidato, tuvo lugar el martes 28 de agosto, el primer día completo de la Convención Nacional Republicana .
Otros candidatos
Dos candidatos importantes, que habían sido invitados a los debates, Herman Cain y Gary Johnson , se habían retirado de la carrera después de que los estados comenzaran a certificar candidatos para los puestos de votación. Dos candidatos serios que no fueron invitados, Buddy Roemer y Fred Karger , tuvieron muchas dificultades para entrar en las papeletas de las primarias y lograron un éxito limitado. Seis candidatos, L. John Davis , Randy Crow , Chris Hill , Keith Drummond , Mike Meehan y Mark Callahan , calificaron para la boleta en dos primarias, mientras que el resto, más de 25 en total, estaban en la boleta solo en una, ya sea New Hampshire o Arizona, que tenían requisitos relativamente fáciles. Resultados
Las primarias y los caucus pueden ser vinculantes o no vinculantes en cuanto a la asignación de delegados a las respectivas delegaciones estatales en la convención nacional. Pero la elección real de los delegados puede tener lugar en una fecha posterior. Los delegados son (1) elegidos en las convenciones, (2) de las listas presentadas por los candidatos, (3) seleccionados por el presidente estatal o (4) en reuniones de comités o (5) elegidos directamente en los caucus y las primarias. Hasta que los delegados sean efectivamente elegidos, la cantidad de delegados es, por naturaleza, una proyección, pero es solo en los estados con caucus no vinculantes donde no se asignan en la fecha de las primarias o los caucus.

Doce estados (374 delegados) votaron del 3 de enero al 3 de marzo. De los 374 delegados, solo 172 fueron asignados a los candidatos, 18 eran delegados del RNC sin consolidar, 2 fueron asignados a Huntsman pero sin consolidar, [27] y 182 delegados no fueron asignados.
