Historia

La diócesis de Crediton fue creada a partir de la diócesis de Sherborne en el año 909 d. C. para cubrir el área de Devon y Cornwall . ^[1] Crediton fue elegida como el sitio para su catedral, posiblemente debido a que fue el lugar de nacimiento de San Bonifacio y también a la existencia de un monasterio allí. ^[2]

En 1046, Leofric se convirtió en obispo de Crediton: tras su nombramiento, decidió que la sede debía trasladarse a la ciudad amurallada de Exeter , más grande, culturalmente más significativa y defendible . En 1050, el rey Eduardo el Confesor autorizó que Exeter fuera la sede del obispo de Devon y Cornualles y que se construyera allí una catedral para el trono del obispo. De este modo, Leofric se convirtió en el último obispo diocesano de Crediton y el primer obispo de Exeter . ^[2]

La diócesis permaneció sin cambios hasta 1876, cuando el antiguo Arcedianato de Cornualles se convirtió en la diócesis independiente de Truro .

Obispos

El obispo de Exeter es Mike Harrison , asistido por Jackie Searle , obispo sufragáneo de Crediton , y James Grier , obispo sufragáneo de Plymouth . Arcedianatos y decanatos

La diócesis está dividida en cuatro arcedianatos. El obispo sufragáneo de Crediton supervisa generalmente los arcedianatos de Barnstaple y Exeter, y el obispo sufragáneo de Plymouth, los arcedianatos de Plymouth y Totnes.

Se han producido las siguientes fusiones de decanatos:
