We hope you can join us today, Wednesday, from 6 p.m. on, at our July Bay Area WikiSalon. This month only, we are going to be at Noisebridge, a hackerspace/makerspace 1.5 blocks from the 16th & Mission BART station (see the link for directions). Some of us will be working on the Wikipedia article on basic income. All info here. Some good news - we do not have to be as strict about advance RSVP at Noisebridge, so bring spontaneous guests! (Registering ahead of time is still helpful, as always, as it will help us plan ahead.)
Come and hang out, have some light snacks. Wi-Fi is available, so please bring your editing device if you plan to edit.
Also, Pete just published a writeup of the Wikidojo exercise we did last month. Your comments welcome, if he missed anything! http://wikistrategies.net/ghost-town-royals-wikidojo

Hi folks,
We would like to invite you to this month's Bay Area WikiSalon. The last Wednesday evening of every month, Wikipedia and Wikimedia enthusiasts gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas.
We will have no formal agenda to allow people to freely share ideas and perhaps learn about Wikipedia through hands-on editing. Co-organizer Ben Creasy will be looking at election-related articles to enhance the information available in the upcoming November elections.
Co-organizer Stephen LaPorte has suggested doing an upload-a-thon for Wiki Loves Monuments. Niki, the California coordinator for WLM will be in attendance. WLM is an annual event and the official dealine is Friday the 30th for submissions to count towards awards.
Or, you can grab a couch, a booth, or a stool and do your own thing.

Hello Jon (WMF), please see Wikipedia talk:Editnotice regarding the change you enacted.
Your recent edit to MediaWiki:Common.css, adding #content
to one of the .hlist :after
rules, made its specificity higher than the two subsequent .hlist :after
, causing those rules to no longer function. Please add #content
to the other two .hlist :after
rules. Matt Fitzpatrick (talk) 19:49, 10 October 2017 (UTC)

Thanks for the code fixup on mobile use.
I've never really coded for it, and I've never actually tried to use it on mobiles. I don't know how it is turned on. There's no SHIFT key on mobiles (that's easy to hit) so I didn't think it could be used there. Endo999 (talk) 17:42, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
There are no errors on my google console usage graph.Endo999 (talk) 17:43, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
Hi Jon, FYI re this edit, these errors are caused by an editor erroneously loading the config script in their global/common/skin.js so you should check these instead of fixing a redwarnConfig.js if you see errors of these sort in future - as the file is automatically updated any changes you make will end up cleared when the file is regenerated. ✨ Ed talk! ✨ 19:30, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
Aside from the excitement these past few days with Javascript, today I am annoyed with nomobile
.
Premise: I am trying to change the class output by Module:Sidebar from vertical-navbox
to sidebar
. (I don't like that it doesn't match the name of the module and also that it has 7 extra characters it doesn't need which add up when you start looking at the now-TemplateStyles version of the module.)
In trying to achieve said premise, knowing that MobileFrontend strips the content with vertical-navbox class out, I added the nomobile class so that MF could still happily strip the content out.
Little did I know that multiple skins are opinionated on the point even so. Minerva drops a !important on display: none-ing the class while even Timeless also has a display: none on it below 850px (Timeless's mobile number, like 720px in Minerva and elsewhere). I haven't looked into the other responsive versions of skins.
Some options since I clearly think leaving vertical-navbox in the template is a non-starter ;):
!important
for Minerva and not-!important for Timeless and other skins to set display: table, knowing that mobile doesn't see it anyway.sidebar
to the list of keywords for which MF murders content.Any thoughts?
Secondarily, I observed that the TemplateStyles for this template still get dumped into the context on mobile. I am pretty sure you can't really do anything about that at all, but I thought it was an interesting observation. --Izno (talk) 23:49, 26 January 2021 (UTC)
Honestly, I would focus on the mobile domain problem. That's technical debt on the skins part and as the Minerva maintainer I'd love to remove the `nomobile` class in the Minerva skin eventually.
Now all that said I wouldn't rely on `nomobile` at all to be honest. It was a short term fix for a long term problem. If you are using TemplateStyles just add a media query and display: none anything that you don't want to show on mobile and avoid the class entirely. There's no need to rely on it. Sure this will increase the HTML payload of mobile, but leave that to us WMF staff - we can always add rules for DOM-heavy elements at a later date.
As for the name, perhaps consider forking the template and making the current template a transclusion.
Note the logic for stripping HTML is here: https://github.com/wikimedia/operations-mediawiki-config/blob/master/wmf-config/InitialiseSettings.php#L16992
<div class="nomobile">Text</div>
Becomes
<div class="myelement">Text</div><style>.myelement { display: none; }@media screen and ( min-width: 720px ) { .myelement { display: block; }}
Is any of that helpful? Jon (WMF) (talk) 00:57, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
.vertical-navbox
on line 16997). I am trying to change the class name, not the template name, which is why I was looking at nomobile as a way to keep this off the mobile site. I have 0 issue with just letting this out into the wild on mobile if you have no issue (because I'm just not a fan of display: none-ing stuff), but I think you might have an issue, so that's why I'm on this page first. :)My two cents if you have to display: none, the design is flawed to begin with. I've seen a few templates rendering different things for desktop and mobile and I don't recommend doing that, as at some point in the long term future we may want to render identical HTML for mobile and desktop users.
In terms of "letting this out into the wild on mobile" I suggest using your best judgement. If you think the end product is usable/readable on mobile and can commit to testing on mobile going forward, there doesn't seem any reason to hide it. On the other hand, if it's just a garbled mess that can't be read or fixed, then probably best to hide it via a CSS media query.
I think one of the biggest problems with navboxes on mobile is the links are so small they are impossible to touch on a touch screen and given there are so many links in them, it's very common for users to click them accidentally while scrolling with their fingers.
If unsure, you can always ping Alex Hollender (WMF) for some design input. Jon (WMF) (talk) 01:23, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
we could add the nomobile class to all templatesThat's basically what I've already done by adding nomobile (and ensuring vertical-navbox doesn't appear in the wild; I'm down to like 5 templates). I honestly don't care whether vertical-navbox continues to be one that WMF tracks. :)
My two cents if you have to display: noneYes, that's my general opinion as well. Generally, I haven't seen display: none in a whole lot of places.
usable/readableYes, I think it generally is usable (I still have an adjustment to make for mobile because the 'default' whitespace behavior of <a> is nowrap in this context...). Useful/fixable though? Sidebars usually appear (or would in mobile land) above the fold and can be awfully long, so it's a lot of links and a lot of scrolling and maybe after some scrolling finally getting to the content of interest, which I know based on infobox research is not a Good Thing for mobile. (At least infoboxes are about the page topic so it wouldn't kill users to have those first even if they prefer otherwise, not a dozen dozen links to other possibly tangentially-related pages.) Indeed, never mind issues like link density (which can probably be improved for the use case with a media query pretty easily). I can tolerate it (on Timeless), but I'm not the Casual Reader of most-interest.
The thing to remember is that there are people using Vector on mobile phones and people using Minerva on desktop, so this is why I say that `nomobile` should be used as a last resort.
In terms of Timeless, that sounds like a bug in Timeless. The `nomobile` class was introduced (by myself and others) in MobileFrontend as a short term fix to solve the problem of templates that were not mobile-ready while Extension:TemplateStyles was developed. It means "this should not show at mobile resolutions under any circumstance" and any other interpretation is incorrect and a bug should be opened if it is being used to mean something else. I think in the case of the `vertical-navbox` we should remove that from the list of classes that are stripped and use the `nomobile` class where needed. If you tell me that the templates are mobile friendly, I am happy to do that. Jdlrobson (talk) 20:54, 16 February 2021 (UTC) (should have been postedwith my staff hat on: User:Jon (WMF))

I noticed you made a change here to MediaWiki:Monobook.js regarding InstaView. In case you are not aware, InstaView is a wikitext renderer, integrated into navigation popups, but also by a very old livepreview renderer. People who have errors like that likely haven't touched their scripts files since 2005. —TheDJ (talk • contribs) 21:55, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
InstaView.conf =but couldn't find exactly which of the many users (and their scripts) were still active. Given Monobook is logged only users putting it in MediaWiki:Monobook.js seemed like a small price to pay to get the spam out of the error logs. I'm thinking a little about whether it makes sense for user scripts to expire if not touched for several years but haven't thought about that in too much detail but this is definitely a point of interest with respect to that. Any thoughts about whether that would be controversial? Jon (WMF) (talk) 22:08, 11 February 2021 (UTC)
Hey Jon, would it be possible to get some info regarding this edit to MediaWiki:Gadget-twinklefluff.js? The specific page or diff or something would be helpful, 'cause I was surprised to see an error. At least in my console and all testing, $('#mw-diff-ntitle2').find('.mw-userlink')[0]
works fine and returns the span even for a revdel'd or os'd name. Thanks. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 19:17, 24 February 2021 (UTC)

I suspect a user script is tripping this up now. I just don't know what user script and how. Jon (WMF) (talk) 15:44, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
$('#mw-diff-ntitle2').find('.mw-userlink');
will return true
regardless; what needs to be tested is the length
. I've got a PR to plug it up that should be fine, but if it's some userscript issue, I'm more inclined to deal with that and leave the issues for figuring it out; lmk if that's a problem for you and the infrastructure, though, I can push easy. ~ Amory (u • t • c) 18:40, 26 February 2021 (UTC)Template:Taxonbar/styles.css has been nominated for deletion. Hello Jon, any feedback you may have for Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#RfC:_Showing_Editnotices_to_mobile_editors would be welcome. Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 19:13, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
I will note that I'd much rather see a non gadget solution to this problem as the problem with gadgets is they become critical parts of the software and maintainers often leave. If the gadget is enabled, I'll note that it is using various CSS selectors that are subject to change, so please follow tech news and be prepared for gadget maintenance over the next 6 months to keep up with technical refactorings that are planned in MobileFrontend in the latter part of this year ( https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T281930) Jdlrobson (talk) 00:54, 8 July 2022 (UTC)
I noticed phab:T248416#9678769:
Wikimedia sites which have well maintained Common.css can consider switching Common.css on for mobile devices on their wiki providing they do due diligence to ensure that they are using Common.css responsibly (e.g. are managing it's size in a way that doesn't impact performance). Enabling MediaWiki:Minerva.css as render blocking is pushing us in this direction.
I didn't realize $wgMFCustomSiteModules
was the only configuration that needs adjustment to get Common.css render blocking. I think en.wp is at the point it can turn this on (er, off, rather).
After whitespace/comment stripping via ResourceLoader, Common.css is 5.6kb and getting absolutely everything out of Common.css that should be in TemplateStyles only gets us down to 4.1kb, so at most there's only about 1.5kb to shave off there still. I think that means we're at the point we can be considered "responsible" :).
(I'd like to have infoboxes out of there, but I like the technical debt of then-Mobile.css/now-Minerva.css duplicating a bunch of styles a lot less, and missing some others as noted there and elsewhere. Infoboxes is only about 700B (removing would be 4.7kb in Common.css) that we end up needing in some way or another on most articles anyway. And probably the .infobox-?
word gets gzipped nicely which is a chunk of that content.)
It probably needs some massaging at least for resolution-supporting work. I still have to do a diff between what then-Mobile.css/now-Minerva.css has been doing (was there some resolution at which Mobile.css was no longer functional?). Maybe color-supporting later, which I see you're futzing with in Minerva.css currently.
What would be the best way to coordinate that adjustment, both the actual bit flipping as well as checking around for how many things I can break both on and off wiki :)? That task doesn't seem like a task that would need the usual "community consensus demonstrated" requirement for most config adjustments, but knowing if there's anything I don't know about potentially breaking elsewhere seems prudent (thinking about stuff like the "CSS size went up warning I think you've got lying around"). Izno (talk) 07:08, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Note this currently doesn't apply ... to responsive images in MobileFrontend.
Is there a task for that? I've got some CSS that I'm trying to ditch in Minerva.css that would be able to come out for that reason (flagicons being prevented from shrinking to nothing). Izno (talk) 20:59, 6 September 2024 (UTC).mw-tag-markers
is the container that holds tags that display in change streams next to the revision (Watchlist, Contribs, and etc.). Right now in Minerva we have at least one rule that setting a parent of .mw-tag-markers
to 0.85em (and it honestly kind of looked like there were multiple parents setting a font size of 0.85em??). From what I can see of the other skins, nothing else is changing the size of the list items presented in these change streams.Hi Jon, your recent change (Special:Diff/1235525107) included a category link without the leading colon, so now the page is listed at the category. Could you format it with the leading colon to remove it from appearing on the category page, like:
[[:Category:Pending_AfC_submissions]]
