Las insignias de escudo utilizadas por los miembros de los clanes escoceses se basan en escudos heráldicos registrados por el Lord Lyon King of Arms en el Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland . Se da el blasón del escudo heráldico y el lema heráldico con su traducción al inglés. Si bien todas las insignias de escudo de los nombres de clan enumerados son reconocidas por el Lord Lyon King of Arms, solo alrededor de la mitad de estas (alrededor de 140) [1] tienen un jefe de clan que es reconocido por el Lord Lyon King of Arms como el legítimo reclamante de las armas indiferenciadas en las que se basan las insignias de escudo.

Las insignias con el escudo destinadas a usarse como insignias de gorra generalmente están hechas de plata o algún otro metal como el peltre. En el caso de los armigeros, usan su propio escudo dentro de un círculo simple que muestra su propio lema o eslogan, no un cinturón y una hebilla que muestran el del jefe. Las mujeres pueden usar una insignia con el escudo como broche para prender una faja de tartán de su clan en el hombro derecho de su vestido o blusa. Las jefas de clan, las caciques o las esposas de los jefes de clan normalmente llevan una faja escocesa sujetada en su hombro izquierdo.
En la actualidad, los miembros de los clanes escoceses suelen usar insignias con el escudo escocés. Sin embargo, al igual que los tartanes de clan , las insignias con el escudo escocés no tienen una larga historia y deben mucho al romanticismo de la era victoriana y a la vestimenta de los regimientos de las Tierras Altas .
