La Pontificia Universidad Católica de Río de Janeiro ( portugués : Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro ; PUC-Rio ) es una universidad jesuita , católica , pontificia de Río de Janeiro , Brasil . Es responsabilidad conjunta de la Arquidiócesis Católica de São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro y la Compañía de Jesús . En 2022, la PUC-Rio fue clasificada como la décima mejor universidad de América Latina por la revista Times Higher Education . [3]
La Universidad fue creada en 1941 por la Compañía de Jesús para enfatizar los valores humanistas en la búsqueda del conocimiento. La PUC-Rio cuenta con 12.000 estudiantes de pregrado , 2.500 estudiantes de posgrado y 4.000 estudiantes de extensión . En 2009 ocupó el primer lugar entre 2.252 instituciones de educación superior de Brasil en el ENADE, un ejercicio de referencia realizado por el Ministerio de Educación de Brasil . [4] [5]
PUC-Rio has highly accredited faculties in law, engineering, computer science, psychology, economics, business, and international relations.[6] It fosters cultural diversity in its student body. It has participated in exchange programs with Harvard, Notre Dame, UC Berkeley, UCLA, Brown University as well as European universities, with hundreds of students participating each year.[citation needed]
PUC-Rio is located in Gávea[7] in the south of Rio, at the edge of Tijuca National Forest. The campus was once a coffee farm. A creek crossed by three bridges runs through the campus. Several city bus lines pass the university, which is near the suburban neighborhoods of Leblon, Ipanema, Jardim Botânico, and Lagoa. Metrô busses connect the campus to the Antero de Quental subway station in Leblon and the Botafogo subway station on Botafogo beach. The Botanical Gardens and Leblon beach are within walking distance to the university.
The campus was built with donations from institutions and foundations in the early 1940s. In the early '60s the USA through its American Schools and Hospitals Abroad program donated the building now named after President John Kennedy; the grant was received during his administration. Besides the Central Library there are three specialized libraries. Solar Grandjean de Montigny (built in 1823 by the architect of the same name), PUC-Rio's Cultural Center, has year-round visual arts exhibitions. Pilotis (Kennedy building's ground floor) hosts cultural events such as political debates, shows, and fairs. The "Festa Junina" each June features folkloric food, costumes, and dance from old Brazil.
On campus are three restaurants, five coffee-shops, a pizza-parlor, a bookstore, an office supply store, copy centers, branches of Banco Itaú and Banco Santander Brasil, a post office, newsstand, and ATMs. The neighborhood of the university contains more shops, banks, the Planetarium, specialized bookstores, restaurants, and a mall.
La PUC-Rio se puede dividir en cuatro centros universitarios, cada centro está compuesto por decenas de unidades y órganos complementarios responsables de la educación, la investigación y la extensión en sus respectivas áreas del conocimiento.
Para el ingreso de pregrado a la PUC-Rio se utilizan dos exámenes: ENEM y su propia prueba vestibular . Los resultados de estas pruebas se utilizan para determinar la distribución de becas académicas a los estudiantes. PUC-RIO aceptó el 12% de los solicitantes para la promoción de 2022, lo que la convierte en una institución muy selectiva.
El lenguaje de programación Lua fue desarrollado por Roberto Ierusalimschy , Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo y Waldemar Celes, miembros del Computer Graphics Technology Group [11] de la PUC-Rio, a partir de 1993.
