Se han encontrado restos de al menos 230 anfiteatros romanos repartidos por toda la zona del Imperio Romano . Se trata de grandes recintos al aire libre, de forma circular u ovalada, con asientos elevados de 360 grados y que no deben confundirse con los teatros más comunes , que son estructuras semicirculares. Sin embargo, hay varios edificios que han tenido un uso combinado como teatro y anfiteatro, especialmente en Europa occidental.
