En 1965, el científico alemán Alfred Dieck catalogó más de 1.850 cuerpos de pantano, pero estudios posteriores revelaron que gran parte del trabajo de Dieck era erróneo. [2] Se han recuperado y estudiado cientos de cuerpos de pantano, [3] aunque se cree que solo alrededor de 45 cuerpos de pantano permanecen intactos en la actualidad. [4]

- Puede haber más de un nombre en la categoría "nombre", que también puede usarse para mostrar ortografías alternativas de los nombres del cuerpo del pantano.
- La categoría de ubicación muestra la ciudad o el estado en el que se descubrió el cuerpo del pantano, aunque algunos cuerpos del pantano se descubren en las fronteras entre países.
- La datación por carbono-14 se utiliza para determinar un rango de edad basándose en el examen de las vidas medias de los isótopos de carbono.
- La categoría "sexo" describe si el hallazgo fue masculino, femenino o indeterminado.
- La categoría "descripción" muestra detalles del examen, así como las características físicas del cuerpo. Algunas secciones pueden indicar " Se ha publicado poco sobre este hallazgo" , lo que significa que hay poca o ninguna información publicada sobre el cuerpo del pantano.
