Para las competiciones de atletismo de los Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de 2012 se aplicaron los siguientes sistemas de clasificación. La lista se actualizó al 30 de junio de 2012. La clasificación finalizó el 8 de julio de 2012.
Normas de calificación
Un Comité Olímpico Nacional (CON) puede inscribir hasta 3 atletas calificados en cada evento individual si todos los atletas cumplen con el estándar A, o 1 atleta por evento si cumplen con el estándar B. Un CON también puede inscribir un máximo de 1 equipo de relevo calificado por evento. Los CON pueden inscribir atletas independientemente del tiempo (1 atleta por sexo) si no tienen atletas que cumplan con los estándares A o B de clasificación. Esto hace posible que cada nación tenga un mínimo de dos representantes en el deporte.
Los tiempos de clasificación se pueden obtener en varias competiciones durante el período de clasificación que cuentan con la aprobación de la IAAF . Son elegibles todas las competiciones al aire libre y en pista cubierta aprobadas, con excepción de las carreras de 100 m, 200 m y 110/100 m con vallas. El período de clasificación para los 10.000 m, maratón, marcha y eventos combinados es del 1 de enero de 2011 al 8 de julio de 2012; para todos los demás eventos individuales es del 1 de mayo de 2011 al 8 de julio de 2012. La clasificación para los relevos es del 1 de enero de 2011 al 2 de julio de 2012.
Además de los estándares de calificación que se indican a continuación, los corredores de maratón que finalicen entre los 20 primeros en el Campeonato Mundial de 2011 o entre los 10 primeros en cualquier maratón de la serie de oro de la IAAF dentro del período de calificación también se consideran como si hubieran obtenido el estándar A. Los CONs aún podían seleccionar a los participantes utilizando sus propias reglas, con la condición de que todos los atletas hubieran alcanzado el tiempo de clasificación. Por ejemplo, Estados Unidos seleccionó a los atletas basándose en el resultado de la prueba de clasificación olímpica de 2012. Suecia solo inscribió a atletas lo suficientemente buenos como para alcanzar al menos el octavo puesto, según una evaluación del CON sueco.
