Tony Randerson, who had been elected in 2022 for Labour, was a candidate of the Social Justice Party, but was listed as an independent on the ballot paper due to the party not being registered with the Electoral Commission.[20] The party was subsequently formally registered in February 2024.[21][22]
- In June 2023, Mike Jordan, elected as a Conservative in 2022, left the party to contest the 2023 Selby and Ainsty by-election as an independent candidate, causing the council to go under no overall control.[23] He subsequently joined Reform UK in February 2024.[24]
- Also in June 2023, Mike Schofield, elected as a Liberal Democrat in 2022, left the party to sit as an independent.[25]
- Joseph Body was originally nominated by the Labour Party, but withdrew as a candidate prior to the closing of nominations.[26]
- In February 2024, Pat Marsh, elected as a Liberal Democrat in 2022, was expelled from the Liberal Democrat group due to comments made about the Israel–Hamas war on social media. She then sat as an independent until her resignation from the council later that month.[27]
- In March 2024, Paul Haslam, elected as a Conservative in 2022, left the party to contest the 2024 York and North Yorkshire mayoral election as an independent candidate.[28]
