Sean (x, y, z) las coordenadas cartesianas estándar y (ρ, θ, φ) las coordenadas esféricas , con θ el ángulo medido desde el eje +Z (como [1], consulte las convenciones en coordenadas esféricas ). Como φ tiene un rango de 360°, se aplican las mismas consideraciones que en las coordenadas polares (bidimensionales) siempre que se toma un arcotangente. θ tiene un rango de 180°, que va de 0° a 180°, y no plantea ningún problema cuando se calcula a partir de un arcocoseno, pero tenga cuidado con un arcotangente.
Si, en la definición alternativa, se elige que θ vaya de −90° a +90°, en dirección opuesta a la definición anterior, se puede encontrar únicamente a partir de un arcoseno, pero tenga cuidado con un arcocotangente. En este caso, en todas las fórmulas siguientes, todos los argumentos en θ deben tener el seno y el coseno intercambiados y, como derivada, también el más y el menos.
