El Victoria Ska and Reggae Festival también conocido como "Ska Fest" es un festival de música que se lleva a cabo cada verano en Victoria, Columbia Británica , Canadá . El festival está organizado y ejecutado por la Victoria BC Ska Society, una organización sin fines de lucro, y más de 200 voluntarios. Es el festival de ska de mayor duración en Norteamérica. A pesar de su nombre, también ha presentado artistas de un amplio espectro de géneros que incluyen punk rock , hip-hop , música soul , música calipso , jazz y más.
La edición del vigésimo aniversario se llevó a cabo del 19 al 23 de junio de 2019 y contó con Ky-mani Marley , Less Than Jake y Cherry Poppin' Daddies .
El Ska Fest hizo una pausa en 2020-21, y 2022 fue la 21ª edición anual.
El primer Victoria Ska Festival fue un evento de un día el 12 de agosto de 2000 en Market Square, Victoria . En 2012, se había convertido en un evento de cinco días que abarcaba múltiples lugares y atraía a 10.000 asistentes durante el transcurso del festival. Los artistas principales notables del pasado incluyen a Toots and the Maytals , Ky-Mani Marley , Skatalites , Dub FX , Easy Star All Stars y Fishbone .
El evento fue organizado por primera vez por Dane Roberts para completar un período práctico para obtener su título en la Universidad de Victoria . [1] El primer festival contó con The Scofflaws , King Django , Chris Murray y Pressure Cooker .
En 2010, el festival se expandió a otras plataformas de medios al incorporar una "Exposición de arte de historias y lugares de interés" que presenta documentos visuales y de audio grabados de miembros de la comunidad sobre el festival.
2011 marcó el 12º aniversario del festival y contó con un regreso a Market Square y un calendario ampliado, lo que hizo que el festival durara cinco días. La expansión de las plataformas de medios aumentó con la introducción del Rocksteady Collective. Esta característica incluyó pintura corporal en vivo, presentaciones y talleres exclusivos o únicos con artistas, así como lienzos de arte interactivos que permitieron a los asistentes crear sus propios recuerdos del Ska & Reggae Fest. Desde su inclusión en 2011, el Rocksteady Collective ha crecido hasta albergar su propia serie de conciertos durante el festival, además de albergar artes culinarias y bailes burlescos, además de seguir siendo el componente de artes visuales del festival.
En 2015, el nombre se cambió a "Victoria Ska & Reggae Festival" para describir mejor la diversa programación del evento.
