Simurq PIK (Azerbaijani: Simurq Peşəkar Idman Klubu) was an Azerbaijani football club based in Zaqatala, that competed in the Azerbaijan Premier League.
The club was founded in 2005 and participated in the Azerbaijan First Division. The club's first season was very successful, and in the 2006–07 season, the club was participating in the Azerbaijan Premier League.[1] After its debuting season in the Premier League of Azerbaijan, Simurq finished 9th out of 14 clubs.
The Azerbaijani magazine Football+ recognized Simurq as the "Surprise of the Year" of the 2006–07 season based on polling results.[1] In 2007–08 season club has made another step forward, and finished the season at 7th place. The club gained third place in Azerbaijan Premier League 2008-09, by making the best indicator of the team in its history.
In 2009 the club's debut in European competitions was not very successful as they were eliminated in the 1st qualifying round of UEFA Europa League by Bnei Yehuda.[2][3] The 2009–10 season for club was not successful, even though the team had good start before the winter break. After the winter, club began to fall in the standings and won only 8th place, while coach Roman Pokora dismissed after a string of poor results.
In June 2010, the club's executive director, former Azerbaijan national football team manager Gjoko Hadžievski became the club's new coach. However, due to financial problems Simurq could not sign big local and foreign players and coach staff was forced to take less experienced players and use from youth system. The 2010–11 season became the worst in club history as Simurq was relegated to the Azerbaijan First Division after finishing 11th place.[4] However club is allowed participate in the next season to replace Mughan who had sponsorship problems.[5][6]
El 18 de julio de 2011, el club firmó un contrato con Sergey Yuran , exfutbolista y entrenador de fútbol ucraniano . [7] El 5 de marzo de 2012, tras la dimisión de Sergey Yuran, Igor Getman se convirtió en el primer entrenador azerbaiyano en dirigir al Simurq como interino hasta el final de la temporada. [8] Pero después de seis días, el club anunció a Giorgi Chikhradze como su nuevo entrenador. Simurq comenzó con fuerza la temporada 2012-13 , pero después del inicio del nuevo año, la forma del equipo tropezó, obstaculizando su objetivo de la Copa de Europa.
Durante el verano de 2015 el club cerró debido a problemas económicos. [9]
El estadio de la ciudad de Zaqatala es un estadio de fútbol en Zagatala , Azerbaiyán . Actualmente se utiliza como estadio del club y tiene capacidad para 3.500 personas.
Desde la fundación del club, Simurq ha tenido un solo escudo. Fue adoptado oficialmente para el inicio de la temporada 2006-07 y se basó en un mítico pájaro de fuego sagrado Fénix con fondo de castillo. Proviene del nombre del club Simurq, que significa Fénix en idioma azerbaiyano . Los nuevos uniformes de local y visitante se dieron a conocer en junio de 2013 para la temporada 2013-2014. La equipación de local es de rayas negras y amarillas y la de visitante es blanca, siendo Joma el fabricante de la equipación.
En 2013, el club presentó un escudo oficial, diseñado por el diseñador gráfico azerbaiyano Elnur Sharifli de Polonia . [12]
Simurq tiene una gran base de seguidores en relación con su comparativa falta de éxito en el campo. La afición del Simurq ha desempeñado un papel fundamental en la larga estancia del club en Zaqatala. [13] [14]
