Introduction

This editor is a
Master Editor IV
and is entitled to display this
Orichalcum Editor Star.

Welcome to my user page.

The areas that I work the most in tend to shift. A few that I've worked at steadily long term are folk music topics and articles, "northern" history and wilderness related topics (especially the fur trade era), geographic and scientific topics as well as various technical topics.

In a joint effort with user Wpwatchdog we successfully built & took the Edmund Fitzgerald article through GA, FA and then to featured article of the day for November 10th, 2011. A great experience going through FA that I don't intend to repeat, although in 2021 I substantially reworked and expanded Great Lakes Storm of 1913 during an FAR to allow it to retain it's FA status and again in 2022 for the USS Missouri (BB-63) article.

On and off I also do a fair amount of GA reviews, specializing in taking the ones that have been waiting the longest, which are usually the heavier messier ones, as well as the more highly technical ones. I am also active helping out on the major policy pages....I believe that improving policies and structures is key to fixing the significant problems that Wikipedia has. I've been active as a new article review /curation / New Page Patrol volunteer. I like helping newbies, especially ones who are experts in their fields but are having trouble understanding Wikipedia, a type important to progress from Wikipedia's current plateau.

Account declarations: I have an older (2007) essentially never-used inactive account goober9000 and also a declared account TheParasite which is explained there and which had 2 only whimsical edits outside of its user space before I retired it in 2011. I assisted someone that I mentor in real life in setting up North8001 for them to try to get them started editing Wikipedia which didn't happen and so now it's my (unused) account. Near-zero edits though I might use it when working from unsecured locations.

I live in the US and am male.

Absences

I takes some trips where I'm completely off the grid and others where I avoid the internet. I don't post notices with dates on those. If you were expecting to hear from me and didn't, you might want check my edit history to see if it might be one of those.

Here is a hard earned cookie for your exceptional teamwork on the SS Edmund Fitzgerald article. It feels like we should go out for a beer.

Thanks! I'll have to let Blueboar know that we're sharing one.  :-). You certainly also have one coming but I have to figure out how to do it right. North8000 (talk) 11:42, 8 September 2011 (UTC)

Half Barnstar

Your experience on here shined through as you eased back on the dispute and worked to a compromise. While I was certainly involved I think the crux of the dispute and minor hostility was between you and the owner of the other half. So both of you backed off and Focused on content which I think resulted in a compromise.--0pen$0urce (talk) 18:49, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks! I try. This coming from someone I tussled with a bit means a lot. BTW, my passion here is only for accurate, informative wording. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 19:00, 10 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks and my pleasure. Means extra coming from someone I sometimes disagree with. You have one coming too. Thanks for the invite! North8000 (talk) 14:56, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for quality articles, on scouting and on ships, such as SS Edmund Fitzgerald, for teamwork, for bringing "some reason to chaos", for: "view every opponent ... as a current or potential friend", - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (3 July 2010)!

--Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:46, 18 January 2013 (UTC)

Barnstar for you

Many thanks

Many thanks for giving Uncle David its GA review! I was beginning to fear that it would languish on the waiting list forever due to its subject matter. Best, Midnightblueowl (talk) 16:55, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

Happy to do it. It was a first for me.  :-) A part of the fun of GA reviewing articles. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 17:42, 26 May 2013 (UTC)

For being so sensible and nice. I can't imagine why I ever got mad at you, so you don't have to keep reminding me I did  :-)

User:Carolmooredc 20:01, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! BTW, I never mean to remind you. A few situations arise where I think useful to say "been there, it's no big deal, and respected when it's from someone who's sole focus here is quality articles. North8000 (talk) 20:21, 30 July 2013 (UTC)

Appreciated, but feel free to avoid blowback from others on it. User:Carolmooredc 14:59, 1 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! The compliment and expression of confidence that I gave was well deserved. You are a great editor to work with. North8000 (talk) 10:49, 3 September 2013 (UTC)

You make a difference

A cookie for you!

Thanks! I usually grab the oldest ones in fairness to those have been waiting the longest. (Which is pretty long right now). The type I'll take includes the heaviest real-world topics and the more obscure ones, which some tend to avoid. It's an adventure, I never know what I'll be learning next! Thanks again. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 02:29, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
Very cool. I'm trying to get better about doing the same, though I often suffer from debilitating Shiny Penny Syndrome, i.e., "Oooh, someone just nominated a song I heard once in high school!" Anyway, keep up the good work, it's much appreciated! - Khazar2 (talk) 02:35, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

Thanks! And nice work on that article. That is the type of topic that is inaccessible to most people unless people like you do the work that you are doing. Sincerely, 10:09, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Belated thanks

I know this is terribly late but I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your participation at my RfA. I was very inspired by the many that supported me and it's that feeling of friendship and camaraderie that keeps me coming back to the project. So, thank you for your support and for your continued sense of fairness and compassion in all areas of WP. I look forward to the opportunity to work together in the days to come. Best wishes, --Keithbob • Talk • 19:25, 2 April 2014 (UTC)

Thank you so much, it means a lot to me that you noticed all of those things. Right now the defacto criteria are either "has avoided all difficult areas" or "got in back when it was easy". I think that refinement of that process is needed and will help Wikipedia. Sincerely, North8000 (talk) 20:14, 2 April 2014 (UTC)
