Football league

The Serie A has 36 teams (5 Liga de Expansión MX Reserve Teams and 31 Serie A Teams) divided into three groups. For the 2024–25 season, it will be a return of a short tournament format (Apertura & Clausura) consisting of 11 group matches and 3 inter-group matches (14 total) played home & away and the liguilla. The top two teams from each group and the two best third places at the end of the season will play in the Liguilla for a spot to play for promotion to Liga de Expansión MX provided that their stadiums meet the requirements to ascend.

The Serie A was created in the second half of 2008, with the participation and approval of the owners of the teams of the Second and Third Division, being next to Serie B part of the Liga Premier.

As of the 2024–25 Season, Atlético Morelia, Celaya, Correcaminos UAT, Mineros de Zacatecas and U. de G. all from Liga de Expansión MX will join the Liga Premier to give young players professional experience. However, only Correcaminos UAT and Leones Negros UdeG will have a reserve team, while Celaya, Atlético Morelia and Mineros de Zacatecas will have an associated team that will have its own identity.

1. Although the team started the season at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario de Colima, the club changed field starting in week 8 of the 2023–24 season.
2. Although the club registered the Estadio Marte R. Gómez as its official field, the team plays most of its matches at the Estadio Universitario Eugenio Alvizo Porras

Offseason Changes

• On May 11, 2024 Aguacateros CDU was promoted from Serie B to Serie A.^[8]
• On May 25, 2024 Acatlán was promoted from Liga TDP to Serie A.^[9] On June 28, 2024 the team was relocated to Tepatitlán.^[10]
• On May 26, 2024 Faraones de Texcoco was promoted from Liga TDP to Serie A.^[11]
• On June 17, 2024 Cimarrones de Sonora Premier was renamed to Cimarrones de Sonora because it became the club's main team after the beginning of the sale process of the team that played in Liga de Expansión MX.^[12]
• On June 28, 2024 Agricultores Guasave and Tapachula Soconusco joined the league as expansion teams.^[13][14]
• On June 28, 2024 Cafetaleros de Chiapas was renamed Jaguares F.C.^[15] Originally the team would be a reserve squad of a Liga de Expansión MX club,^[16] however on July 12, 2024 the project was rejected in the second tier of Mexican football, so finally Jaguares will compete in the Liga Premier – Serie A.^[17]
• On June 28, 2024 Racing Porto Palmeiras was renamed to Racing de Veracruz.^[18]
• On June 28, 2024 C.D. Avispones de Chilpancingo was promoted from Serie B to Serie A as an expansion team.^[19]
• On June 28, 2024 Tigres de Álica F.C. was promoted from Liga TDP to Serie A as an expansion team.^[20]
• On June 28, 2024 Calor and Saltillo were relocated to Serie B from Serie A.^[21]
• On June 28, 2024 Coras and Reynosa were put on hiatus.^[22]
• On June 28, 2024 the league format was modified, the two tournaments per season were reinstated after one year with a single-season tournament.^[23]
• On July 2, 2024 Halcones de Zapopan was renamed Halcones F.C.,^[24] in addition the team was relocated to Querétaro City.^[25]
• On July 12, 2024 Tampico Madero was accepted in the Liga de Expansión MX after winning promotion on May 25.^[26] Alacranes de Durango had also opted for the promotion, however, this team was rejected by the league owners assembly.^[17]
• On July 21, 2024 Escorpiones Zacatepec was rebranded Zacatepec F.C.^[27]
• On July 24, 2024 Zitácuaro was promoted from Serie B to Serie A as an expansion team.^[28]
