Jamalpur, Bangladesh

Jamalpur is a city and district headquarter of Jamalpur District in the division of Mymensingh, Bangladesh. It lies along the bank of the Old Brahmaputra river.

Etymology

The previous name of Jamalpur was Singhjani. It was renamed for Hazrat Shah Jamal, who came from Yemen during the time of Akbar to spread Islam in the region and whose shrine is in the city.

Demographics

As of 2011 Jamalpur Paurashava had 33,845 households and a population of 142,764. 28,743 (20.13%) were under 10 years of age. Jamalpur has a literacy rate of 62.14% and a sex ratio of 999 females per 1000 males.[1]
