Thomas & Friends: The Great Race introduces twelve new characters. In an effort to expand the franchise beyond its current line-up of mostly male British characters, the new engines are from various locations around the world and include three female characters.[2]

Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! is a tie-in with the twenty-second series, serving as both a soft reboot of the franchise and the final full-length animated Thomas & Friends film.
